We Stand in Solidarity…

We stand in solidarity with those protestors who are peacefully expressing their outrage over the cruel and unjust death of George Floyd at the hands of police officers in Minneapolis. We all are angry about the continued use of excessive and often lethal force by some officers against unarmed people of color, and we stand with so many others who are demanding equal justice for all. No one is above the law, especially those who are supposed to enforce it and keep us all safe, regardless of race or ethnicity.

That trust has been broken too many times, but we must not allow our anger to turn to violence. Instead, we can channel our outrage into energy to make real lasting change by engaging in the political process to elect leaders who will protect the civil rights of everyone. We must seek reform in law enforcement agencies that continue to use excessively forceful tactics against people of color, and we must demand that officers who use such force are appropriately investigated and swiftly dealt with.

“We are a nation in pain, but we must not allow this pain to destroy us,” our Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden said this weekend. “We are a nation enraged, but we cannot allow our rage to consume us. We are a nation exhausted, but we will not allow our exhaustion to defeat us.”

Let the memory of George Floyd spark a renewed search for justice for all and for real change in our hearts as well as our laws.
