Throwback Thursday: With Trump’s New Election Audit Request, Throwback To That Time Trump Lost The 2020 Election
AUSTIN, Texas — Desperate times, desperate measures. Thursday, disgraced and deeply unpopular former president Donald Trump came out of the woodwork with a request for one of his slimiest allies. In a letter, Trump asked Gov. Greg Abbott — who is dealing with approval issues of his own — to add legislation requiring an audit of the 2020 election to Texas’ current special session agenda.
We could go on all day about the colossal waste of taxpayer dollars this audit would entail — for results we already know the answer to. And we can note that once again, Donald Trump is simply doing what he does best by encouraging his most loyal followers to do his dirty work — diverting resources away from the issues Texans actually need addressed in favor of pointless financial sinks, from expensive, unnecessary recounts to political theatre on the border. However, what this really boils down to is simple: Donald Trump is a bad loser — and continues to threaten our country by perpetuating the Big Lie at the expense of our very democracy.
If Abbott takes the bait and supports this legislation, he will be perpetuating the myth that voters cannot trust the results of Texas’s elections — even though those elections were overseen by Abbott’s hand-picked Secretary of State in 2020, whose office affirmed Texas’s election was “smooth and secure.” And although Texans will have to wait and see whether Abbott takes the bait, this is one more opportunity for Abbott to follow modern history’s least popular president off the cliff of poor approval ratings — and pander to his rightwing base before a contested GOP primary while continuing to ignore the real challenges facing Texans.
For this week’s Throwback Thursday, we would simply like to remind Texans that the 2020 election was free, fair, and the most secure in our nation’s history — and also, not close by a long shot. Trump lost the 2020 election to President Biden by:
- 74 Electoral College votes
- 7 million in the popular vote, with Biden amassing the largest total number of ballots in U.S. history.
Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa issued the following statement:
“Donald Trump is at it again. Despite losing to President Biden by 74 Electoral College votes and the votes of 7 million Americans, Trump continues to ask Americans to waste taxpayer money rehashing the results of the most secure election in U.S. history. In case anyone missed it nearly 11 months ago: this was not a close election. President Biden earned the highest number of votes of any president in history, and we are not going to waste any more time and money pandering to the ego of a sore loser.
“While Donald Trump’s election audit request is laughable, the GOP’s persistent sowing of doubt about the 2020 election is no joke. On January 6, an armed mob stormed our nation’s Capitol in an attempt to overturn the results of a free and fair election. We’ve seen firsthand the danger of continued Republican attempts to cast doubt on this election — and today’s news is yet another example. But Texans aren’t buying it. We urge Greg Abbott to ignore this joke of a request and focus on the issues actually facing Texans.”
