Texas Republicans Are A Rising Threat To Public Safety
Just Days After Atlanta Attacks, Texas Republicans Voted Against the Violence Against Women Act, Opposed Honoring Capitol Defender Police Officers, and Continued Stoking Racism and Hate
AUSTIN, Texas — In recent months, Republicans in Texas and beyond have become a rising threat to public safety. Despite Republican claims to being the party of security, Texas Republicans have repeatedly shown that in a crisis, their primary instinct is to throw Texans in the way of danger and abdicate all responsibility to keep Texans safe.
Here are just a few examples of recent Republican threats to public safety:
The day following the domestic terrorist attacks in Atlanta, 172 Congressional Republicans voted against renewing the Violence Against Women Act, a critical piece of legislation in the fight to end domestic violence and sexual assault and keep women and nonbinary people safe.
On Wednesday, three Texas Congressmen — Michael Cloud (TX-27), Louie Gohmert (TX-01), and Lance Gooden (TX-05) — voted against awarding Congressional Gold Medals to the police officers who defended the U.S. Capitol during the insurrection in January, including officers who lost their lives.
Texas Republican Congressman Chip Roy (TX-21) co-opted a U.S. House hearing on anti-Asian violence to equate lynching with justice — eroding a chance to advance public safety, and directly attacking Black Americans everywhere. Texas Democrats are calling for Roy’s immediate resignation in the wake of these comments and other racist rhetoric Roy used during the hearing.
Ignoring pleas from public health experts, failed Texas Governor Greg Abbott recently stripped Texans of all statewide COVID-19 protections, a decision that the Center for Disease Control warned will almost certainly lead to a spike in COVID-19 infections and deaths. Abbott’s removal of the mask mandate is already putting service workers in danger, as last night, a man allegedly stabbed a restaurant manager three times after he was told to wear a mask.
The most recent reports show that at least 57 people died during February’s winter storm crisis — mostly of hypothermia — after Governor Abbott refused to do his job and put preparations in place to keep Texans safe.
As has been noted at length, Texas Republicans from Greg Abbott to John Cornyn have failed to manage this pandemic from day one, all while fanning the flames of hate with racist anti-Asian rhetoric. More than 47,000 Texans have died because Abbott refuses to take this pandemic seriously. Black and Latino communities have borne the brunt of these Republican failures, with disproportionate deaths and infection rates.
Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa issued the following statement:
“Republicans may give lip service to safety and security, but their actions speak for themselves. Texas Republicans are one of the biggest public safety threats our state is facing because they are hellbent on putting profits and politics over people. Just this week, Texas Republicans tried to shoot down critical domestic violence legislation, voted against honoring Capitol police who lost their lives because of the insurrection, and in the case of disgraced Congressman Chip Roy, equated lynching with justice in an unconscionable glorification of one of the darkest parts of American history.
“Texas Republicans have repeatedly put Texans’ lives in danger and they will do so again. They left us to die in the pandemic, abandoned us during the winter storm, and are actively driving violence toward communities of color. With Greg Abbott, Chip Roy, and the rest of Texas Republicans in power, Texans are not safe. We are fighting back like our lives depend on it because they do.”
