Texas Democrats’ Statement on Yesterday’s Mass Shooting In Boulder
AUSTIN, Texas — Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa issued the following statement on yesterday’s mass shooting in Boulder:
“My heart goes out to all those affected by yesterday’s horrific events in Boulder. My thoughts are with all those grieving the loss of a loved one, and I send wishes for a full, fast recovery for those injured during this horrifying attack.
“In a country still reeling from the attacks in Atlanta last week, the news of another senseless shooting is difficult to take for all of us. Just a year and a half ago, Texans lived this horror story firsthand during the massacre in El Paso. No one should face the fear of gun violence at the supermarket, the mall, school, or anywhere. Today, we say: enough.
“We must act now to protect the lives of Americans because for far too long, gun violence has been a scourge on every state in our country. It is long past time for common-sense gun reform, and each day we wait on this vital legislation is another day where more American lives are at risk.
“Recently, Democrats in the U.S. House passed two bills that would expand background checks. While this is a good start, we are calling on Republican Senators to join us to pass these important bipartisan bills. Here in Texas, Democrats will continue to push to reform our gun laws because Texans deserve better.
“Thoughts and prayers don’t cut it anymore. We are calling for action to end gun violence and keep people safe. We cannot afford to wait.”
