Texas Democrats Respond to Republican Attacks on Voting
AUSTIN, Texas — Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa and Vice Chair Dr. Carla Brailey issued a statement after state House Republicans voted early Friday morning to pass Senate Bill 7 (SB 7):
“Texas Republicans have rammed the anti-voter SB 7 through the House, knowing it will make voting harder for Texans, especially Texans of color. Republicans are manipulating the voting system in Texas in order to cling to power through illegal and oppressive methods that attempt to intimidate voters.
“But while Republicans continued their race to the bottom last night, in contrast, we saw the best of the Democratic Party on display. Our Democratic House members were united in opposition to this bill, schooled the author on the racism inherent in its language and impacts, and pushed forward a number of amendments to support voters. While Republicans stripped away the voting rights of their constituents, Democrats used their collective power to help the Texans they’re elected to represent. The contrast couldn’t be clearer.
“State Republicans are relentless in their attempts to silence voters in Texas, especially voters of color who came out in record numbers last year. But this fight is far from over. This racist bill still has a ways to go before becoming law. And Democrats will continue to work together to quickly pass federal legislation that ensures the rights of the people to vote are protected in all 50 states.”
