Texas Democrats on the U.S. Military Departure from Afghanistan
AUSTIN, Texas — Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa issued the following statement after President Biden addressed the nation on the U.S. military departure from Afghanistan:
“We originally went into Afghanistan to seek justice for those who attacked our country on September 11th and to defeat Al Qaeda so that they may never use Afghanistan as a base from which to attack us again.
“The President is absolutely correct; we stayed much too long in Afghanistan, spent trillions of dollars, and lost thousands of lives on a war whose mission was completed years ago. There was never going to be a perfect time to leave Afghanistan and I commend the President for staying true to his commitment to our troops, their families, and the promise he made to the American people to withdraw our forces.
“Today, I believe it is critical to give thanks to the countless number of Americans, including thousands of Texans, who served their country bravely and valiantly in Afghanistan. This nation, and our state, is forever indebted to your service.”
