Texas Democrats on SCOTUS Ruling Affecting Voting Rights Across the Country

AUSTIN, TexasTexas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa issued a statement in response to the Supreme Court’s 6-3 opinion to uphold Arizona’s voter suppression tactics, striking a blow to the Voting Rights Act:

“The conservative majority on the Supreme Court has today further eroded the Voting Rights Act by upholding Arizona’s unconstitutional voter suppression measures.

“In Texas, and across the country, we are seeing the most concerted efforts to undermine the vote since the civil rights era. These efforts in Republican-dominated state legislatures across the country are directly related to the Big Lie originally spread by Donald Trump and spineless Republican lawmakers — who continue to not only sow doubt in our elections but further manipulate our voting laws to produce results in their favor.

“Democrats will continue to defend the constitutional right to vote as a cornerstone of our democracy — and we will continue to push for every single voter to have ballot box access, including by registering new voters across Texas. As we approach the anniversary of the Voting Rights Act later this summer, a number of court cases throughout the years have severely weakened protections for all Americans. It is therefore imperative that Congress pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and the For the People Act. We must act now to save democracy.”
