Texas Democrats on Protecting DREAMers
AUSTIN, Texas — Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa issued the following statement in support of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA):
“Texas Democrats stand in strong support of the DREAMers across Texas who have been leading rallies and building power in our communities to protect the DACA program. The recent ruling by a federal judge in Texas is wrong, both legally and morally. The ruling leaves hundreds of thousands of young people with a more uncertain future. It’s a disgrace that so many of the attacks on DACA originated with indicted Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton — betraying thousands of young Texans whom he is supposed to serve and represent in our legal system.
“Nine years ago, the Obama-Biden Administration boldly laid out a solution, albeit temporary, to uphold our promise to DREAMers in this country — fellow Americans who have known no other home but the United States, but were denied the same rights as everyone else.
“While the Biden Administration will appeal the ruling, it is the responsibility of Congress to act and pass meaningful legislation to protect these young people. We must work quickly with fellow Democrats, and against the hateful attacks by Republicans, to protect DACA recipients and all DREAMers in this country. Texas Democrats will continue to stand in solidarity and fight for the reform that members of our Texas communities need and deserve.”
