Texas Democrats Mark Trans Day Of Remembrance

AUSTIN, Texas — Texas Democratic Party Co-Executive Director Jamarr Brown issued the following statement on Trans Day of Remembrance:

“Today, we pause to lift up the memory of the far too many trans Americans whose lives have been taken because of hate. And every day, we stand with trans people across Texas — and work to rid our state of the injustice, inequality, and violence that continue to ravage our trans communities.

“This year, Trans Day of Remembrance comes with an agonizing statistic. 2021 has been the deadliest year on record for the trans community — with the lives of 45 people taken in hate crimes against trans Americans. This is devastating. It’s horrific that in 2021, trans Americans are still facing astronomical rates of hate crimes and violence — with the worst rates among trans people of color. My heart goes out to everyone grieving loved ones today. And I’m incredibly grateful to the trans activists and advocates who, in the face of it all, continue to lead the fight for change — with vision, resilience, and astonishing heart.

“We should be past this. Yet this year, Greg Abbott and Texas Republicans did everything in their power to make life more difficult and dangerous for trans Texans — including with their cruel, shameful bill banning trans kids from playing sports on teams that match their gender identity. When politicians push trans people to the margins, and hack away at trans rights, that directly leads to more transphobia and stigmatization, worse health and economic outcomes for trans Texans, and tragedies like the ones we’re grieving today. Because of Republicans’ all-out assault on trans Texans, the Trevor Project has reported skyrocketing rates of mental health crises among trans kids — with LGBTQ+ hotline calls from Texas youth up 150 percent compared to 2020. No governor should be twisting policy to attack people. Greg Abbott needs to answer for the unconscionable attacks trans Texans are being forced to face.

“To trans and nonbinary Texans everywhere: we see you. We love you. You make our state beautiful. And know that so many of us stand with you. We’re going to keep fighting alongside you for the future we know is possible — a Texas where every single one of us is safe and free to thrive. Y’all means all.”
