Texas Democrats Celebrate the Start of Pride
AUSTIN, Texas — Former State Representative and Texas Democratic Party Legislative Director Glen Maxey issued the following statement on the start of Pride Month:
“Happy Pride, Texas! This month, we celebrate the beauty, brilliance, power, diversity, and strength of the LGBTQ+ community — here in Texas, and beyond.
“We would not be who we are today as a country without the vision, resilience, and contributions of LGBTQ+ Americans over the years. From artists who inspire us, to leaders across every industry, to activists who challenge us to do better, people in the LGBTQ+ community have shaped our country for the better — and continue to do so today.
“During Pride, we celebrate who we are. And we also remember what it took to get us here. Generations of gay, lesbian, trans, queer, bi and pansexual folks have faced down injustice and fought long, difficult battles in the struggle for equality. Icons like Harvey Milk, Sylvia Rivera, and Marsha P. Johnson who stood tall and moved mountains.
“Texas heroes who blazed the trail like my friends Allan Calkin, Gene Harrington, Bill Nelson, Terry Tebedo, Bill Foster, John Thomas, Ray Hill and countless more who’ve moved beyond.
“Fearless lesbian leaders who still inspire me and thousands more, like Kelly Jennings, Pat Gandy, Janna Zumbrun, Pat Cramer, Annise Parker, and Sue Lovell.
“Over the decades and generations, countless people rioted and resisted, marched and mobilized, were jailed, beaten, and killed. Every one of them moved the dial for LGBTQ+ rights. As Texas’ first openly gay state representative, I’m proud as hell to be a part of this history. And I’m more grateful than I can express to the LGBTQ+ Texans who continue to push for justice today.
“The fight is not over. Over the last few months, Republicans in the Texas legislature led a vicious assault on the health, rights, and safety of trans kids. Our kids should never have been put through what Republicans put them through this spring. However, every one of their horrifying bills got blocked because this movement stood its ground — led by trans activists, trans kids and their families. If Pride teaches us anything, it’s that we have power. And the more we believe in it, the stronger we get.
“To LGBTQ+ activists across Texas, thank you for fighting every day to make our state a better place for all of us. And to trans kids and all LGBTQ+ kids across our state: you are loved. You belong here. We are a more beautiful Texas because of you. If that’s not a reason to be proud, I don’t know what is.
“From Texas Democrats everywhere, happy Pride.”
