Democrat Elliott McFadden launches campaign to unseat Congressman Lamar Smith
AUSTIN- Non-profit CEO Elliott McFadden launched his campaign today for the Democratic nomination to defeat Congressman Lamar Smith (TX-21), calling the 30-year career politician an ideological extremist and tool of corporate interests.
“I have been fighting radical Republicans and championing progressive causes for nearly two decades, and I am running because Donald Trump and Lamar Smith are putting at risk the work we are doing to improve our community,” McFadden said.
McFadden is joined by over 125 Central Texas community leaders who have endorsed his effort to replace Smith.
“Elliott has been deeply involved in improving our community,” said community activist David Butts. “He helped lead the efforts to create our healthcare district, and after the first campaign for affordable housing failed in 2012, he put together the successful campaign the next year to bring badly needed affordable housing. Not only does he have the credentials to win the Democratic Primary, he has the background to defeat Lamar Smith.”
“I have known Elliott for over a decade. He has deep roots in the Central Texas Democratic community and has been a leader on the critical issues facing our region,” stated former Hays County Commissioner Jeff Barton.
Environmental activist Margot Clarke said, “While Lamar Smith has been working with Trump to dismantle and discredit critical environmental protections, Elliott has been fighting to protect our air and water quality, working for years finding sustainable solutions for our community’s challenges. As our Congressman, he will follow science, not corporate campaign contributions, to enact policy to address climate change.”
McFadden started as the Executive Director of the Travis County Democratic Party and then managed the successful efforts to create the Travis County Healthcare District and invest $65 million in affordable housing. He is now the leader of Austin B-cycle, one of the most successful bike share systems in the United States.
“While I worked to expand access to healthcare in Central Texas, Smith voted to strip healthcare coverage from 23 million Americans,” McFadden continued. “While I led the effort that secured affordable housing for thousands of low income families, the Trump budget would threaten Meals on Wheels and Habitat for Humanity. Smith has shown a complete disregard for effective policy and the best interests of the residents of his district. It is time for him to go.”
