Biden Taps Harris County Sheriff to Lead ICE
AUSTIN, Texas — Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa issued the following statement regarding the decision by President Biden to tap Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez to lead U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE):
“As a fellow Texan, I am very proud that our president has chosen Ed Gonzalez to lead U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Ed is beyond qualified as a veteran law enforcement officer with more than two decades of experience in the field. He currently leads the largest sheriff’s department in the state and the third-largest in the country. Ed goes by a strong moral code and does not cave under pressure.
“Ed has a long track record of putting our communities first. During his first term as Harris County Sheriff, Ed ended the department’s participation in an offensive Trump-era, anti-immigrant program. Under the program, local law enforcement questioned the immigration status of people who committed simple offenses such as traffic violations and held them until the federal government could deport them. Ed showed his leadership by being vocal about this harmful program — arguing that it endangered residents by pushing immigrants further into the shadows, as they hesitated to seek help from law enforcement out of fear of deportation.
“Ed’s approach towards immigration enforcement lines up perfectly with the Biden administration belief that immigration enforcement should not focus on deporting immigrants who pose little threat to the community. It is this courage and leadership that we need to help make our communities safer and protect the most vulnerable among us. I encourage the Senate to confirm Ed Gonzalez as soon as possible.”
