“I believe Hays County voters want a commissioner with the integrity and leadership qualities that our rapidly growing community demands,” Ms. Ford said. “I will work hard to restore the public’s trust in the commissioner’s court by making it more open and by making county government more responsive to our changing needs. Most importantly, I will serve the interest of our entire community, not just a select few.”
Karen Ford was elected to the office of Precinct 4 Commissioner for a number of reasons. “I want to bring forward thinking, solid reasoning and respectful leadership to this office. Our County is facing growing pains like never before. We must understand that economic growth and stability in this region go hand in hand with conservation of our resources. We must work smart for rational growth. The old ways of doing things will not serve us well in the future.”
During 2004-2005, Karen Ford served Hays County as a stakeholder representing rural neighborhood interests in the Regional Water Quality Protection Plan recently adopted by the commissioners’ court. She is currently the Board Vice President for the Hill Country Alliance, chairs the Nutty Brown Road Neighbor’s Association, and has been involved in numerous public education campaigns that affect social health and welfare.
A resident of Hays County for ten years, Karen is a small business owner who operates a communications company located near Dripping Springs. With more than 25 years of experience in marketing and communications, Karen understands the need for open, honest government and the benefits of communicating regularly with citizens to seek their views on important public matters.
Before launching her own company, Karen was the Director of Creative Services at EnviroMedia, an Austin-based public relations and advertising agency. Her work there included litter prevention for the Don’t Mess with Texas campaign, water conservation for City of Dallas, and youth tobacco prevention for the Texas Department of State Health Services. Current work includes education and outreach for the Arroyo Colorado Watershed Protection Plan in the Lower Rio Grande Valley, river litter prevention for the Nueces River Authority, marketing and pr for a conservation development west of Johnson City, and an education campaign targeting young adults for the Texas Council on Family Violence.
A mother and wife, Karen lives with her husband, Nick Burkhalter, a custom homebuilder, and 18-year-old son Jake Lynch. She enjoys horseback riding in the hills behind her home and values the peace and beauty of a rural life in Hays County.
Ms. Ford is committed to the job of a full-time commissioner and looks forward to walking and talking with constituents across the county over the next weeks and months.
