Experience
Sherri K. Tibbe, the newly elected Hays County District Attorney, has 11 years of experience as a prosecutor working for the Texas Attorney General’s Office and Travis County.
Previously, Sherri was the Chief of Travis County Court No. 4, that deals with domestic violence cases. Prior to that, Sherri was the Chief in County Court No. 3. From May 2004 to January 2005, she served in the Travis County District Attorney’s Office, assigned as an ADA in the 147th Judicial District Court prosecuting a variety of criminal cases. Sherri began her career with Travis County in June 2001.
Sherri started her career as a prosecutor in the Texas Attorney General’s Office in 1994. During her seven-year tenure as an Assistant Attorney General, she handled asset forfeiture cases linked to illegal narcotics trafficking, auto theft and illegal gambling cases. While working at the AG’s Office, she was sworn as a prosecutor in several counties across the State of Texas, including Hays County, Ector County, Nueces County, Kleberg County, and Kaufman County, among others. She was a part of the auto theft prevention and gambling task forces.
Education
After graduating from high school in Ohio, Sherri attended the University of Cincinnati and received an Associate’s Degree specializing in Legal Assisting. After moving to Texas and working for the Attorney General’s office as a legal assistant, Sherri left her job at the AG’s office and attended the University of Texas where she earned a Bachelor of Social Work with Honors in December 1989. Sherri attended the University of Houston Law Center and earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence in May 1994.
Sherri has held a number of jobs over the years, gaining valuable experience that has served to enhance her abilities as a prosecutor. While in high school and during college, she worked as lifeguard and swimming instructor. Sherri paid for her college tuition by working as a night court clerk at Austin Municipal Court and as a secretary for the National Treasury Employees Union. While in law school, Sherri worked as a legal intern at the Harris County District Attorney’s Office in Houston from August 1992 until November 1993. She also worked as a research assistant to one of her law school professors.
After graduation from the University of Texas and prior to attending law school, Sherri worked as a caseworker with Child Protective Services. It was during her tenure at CPS, that Sherri gained valuable experience in dealing with child abuse victims and seeing firsthand what violence in the home can do to a child. During her undergraduate work, she worked as a volunteer crisis counselor and completed her social work internship with the Victim Services Division at the Austin Police Department. While at Victim Services, Sherri worked directly with victims of crime and observed firsthand what victims suffer. This experience has given her valuable insight in dealing with victims as a prosecutor.
Biography
Sherri grew up with two sisters in Russellville, Ohio, a small farming community, on the family farm where her parents still reside. Sherri’s father worked as a factory foreman and supervisor and her mother worked as an office manager for a dental office. In 1994, Sherri married Bobby Borthwick, owner of J & B Trim and a lifelong Hays County resident, and became a step-mom to three great boys, Brandon, Chris and Brian. Sherri and Bobby became parents once again in January, 1996, when they were blessed with twin girls, Haley and Kasey. Bobby and Sherri live in the Buda area where all of their children have attended the Hays Consolidated ISD.
Sherri has always found time to spend with her children, despite having a huge workload and traveling as an attorney with the Attorney General’s office. Sherri has coached both pee wee basketball and kinder soccer on her daughters’ teams and spends every weekend attending her girls’ soccer games and cheerleading competitions. Sherri’s favorite activity is spending time with her family and working around the house.
