In a notice to Texas progressive groups and Democratic Party offices on Wednesday, Bee Cave Democrat Ben Garves declared his intent to challenge incumbent US Congressman Roger Williams for his seat representing District 25 in 2018.
Garves, a local activist, tech product manager, and webseries host, recently helped organize and lead the April 22 March for Science event in downtown Austin.
“I’ve marched with women, campaigned for equality, and led tens of thousands of protestors down the streets of Austin,” Garves said in a statement to the press on Thursday.
“I’ve seen it all first hand, folks. Struggling race relations, poverty, the successes and the failures of our government across the nation. The perils of hatred, and the beauty of hope pouring out of the compassionate. The way that science saves lives, and how love unites people, even over the most divisive issues.”
According to the candidate’s website, he’s taking a non-standard approach to Democratic ideals. His three main goals encompass paying off the national debt, investments in education to create jobs, and making sure race relations continue to thrive.
